Home Our services Young-Onset Dementia Care programme
Young onset dementia is defined simply as people who are diagnosed with dementia before the traditional retirement age of 65.
People with young onset dementia have very different needs to older people with Dementia. Our specialist residential unit for people with early onset dementia at St Mary’s Court residential care home is a safe, friendly and stimulating home where every member of staff is trained and experienced in young onset dementia.
Every person we support has their own action plan, which builds on their strengths and preferences and helps them to stay healthy and to maximise their independence.
St Mary’s Court Care Home Braintree, Essex is primarily a residential care home, however we currently have a number of day care places available within our specialist young onset dementia unit which features the following:
With service users at the very heart of everything we do, our values are KINDNESS, COMFORT & RESPECT
Many of the people living in Braintree at St Mary’s Court with young onset dementia are very active, so we offer a wide range of fun and meaningful activities and leisure pursuits such as swimming, the gym, cinema, shopping, cooking, art, pottery, snooker, table tennis, carpentry, and local college courses.
We have our own secure garden that opens directly off the unit so our residents can safely spend as much time outside as they like.
At St Mary’s Court we have made a warm and friendly home where people who need intensive nursing or care 24 hours a day can live safely and well.
We provide three services in separate units. Older people who need 24-hour, high dependency or palliative nursing care are expertly cared for in our specialist nursing Unit.
In our specialist dementia units we provide skilled care services for older people with dementia. People with young onset dementia are cared for by their own dedicated team.
Our dementia care teams are highly trained and knowledgeable. They work closely with each resident, providing individual care and support to enable them to live safely and as independently as possible, and with dignity at all times.

I just wanted to say thank God there are people like you working in the care system that give us the knowledge that not everyone is bad. I thank my lucky stars that you were on Ash unit to look after Ian and care and protect him. Now I truly know you are my guardian angel.
Ian is at home this weekend. He doesn’t speak much now, just the odd word, but he likes me to sing to him and he tries to join in. I don’t think we will be hitting the big time with our voices!!!! I just love being around him – he is my hero and I love him. I hope you and your family are well and happy. Thank you for being you. Lots of love, Jane”
“The staff are not only professional in their approach, they are also very personable and it’s clear they do actually care above all else. The facilities and organisation are first rate. The buildings and grounds are well maintained and reflect the high standards of care taken throughout the care village. My wife’s dignity is respected at all times and her comfort is always the main focus.”
“I’ve been at the home for nearly 18 months, I know what it’s all about and would recommend the above home because I like it very much and I’m happy here.”
